A memorial service for Reuben Zubrow, a University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ professor who taught economics to more than 30,000 students, will be held on Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on campus. A small reception is scheduled to follow at 5 p.m. in the Heritage Center.

State Representative and CU alumnus Gil Romero (D-Pueblo) will discuss “Politics and Public Service” at the University of Colorado School of Law Dec. 3. The one-hour “brown bag” session, which is free and open to the public, will begin at noon in Room 103 of the Fleming Law Building. The event is sponsored by the dean’s office. A member of the Colorado House of Representatives since 1984, Romero serves on the Legislative Joint Budget Committee, the House Appropriations Committee and the state Community Corrections Advisory Council.

For Thanksgiving, Norlin and the branch libraries will close at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26, and reopen Friday, Nov. 28. Hours for the remainder of the holiday weekend will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28 and Nov. 29, and noon to midnight Nov. 30.

The College of Business and Administration will present a forecast for the 1998 Colorado economy beginning at 1:15 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Brown Palace Hotel in downtown Denver. The program is free and open to the public. The comprehensive forecast is presented annually by the college and represents the consensus of more than 75 Colorado business, education and government leaders. The group develops the forecast based on contacts with hundreds of business and industry leaders, its own expertise and economic projections.

A major gas line leak at 18th Street and Colorado Avenue on the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus caused the evacuation of 12 campus buildings Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported, according to CU police. The leak was reported about 9:35 a.m. Buildings were evacuated by building proctors and campus police officers. Affected buildings were Muenzinger Psychology, Ketchum Arts and Sciences, Hunter Science, Duane Physics, Environmental Design, Fine Arts, JILA, Music, Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry, MCD Biology, Ramaley and Telecommunications.

Funeral services have been set for Daniel Coursey, a University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ student who died last week while studying abroad at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. Services will be at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 2190 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver. A reception at John F. Kennedy High School will follow. Coursey, 20, died of suspected meningococcal meningitis on Nov. 13.

Students in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will honor five area businesses with Corporate Excellence Awards at a reception tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom. The annual awards recognize businesses that contribute to the community. The awards and recipients are as follows: •The Technology and Innovation Award – QualMark Corp., Broomfield. The company provides accelerated testing systems that detect design defects in all types of products.

Two University of Colorado alums will make their first journeys into space on Wednesday, Nov. 19, when NASAÂ’s space shuttle Columbia blasts off from Cape Kennedy, bringing the total number of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ astronaut alums to 15.

A new program will link doctoral students at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ with professors at other Colorado colleges and universities. "The goal is to expand the teaching experiences of aspiring professors and expose them to institutions where the majority of teaching jobs are found," said Hoag Holmgren, assistant director of the Graduate Teacher Program. "More jobs are available at liberal arts schools, smaller state schools and community colleges than at major research universities like CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ."
