The American Indian Science & Engineering Society, affiliated with the engineering college at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has received a 1997 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. The $10,000 award is funded through the National Science Foundation to recognize mentoring efforts and programs that increase the participation of under represented groups in science, math and engineering.

Sanjai Bhagat, a professor of finance and economics at the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ College of Business and Administration, will address members of the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Youth Justice in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Oct. 10. BhagatÂ’s research on institutional investors will help the federal agencies in their quest to formulate U.S. policy. The FTC is interested in BhagatÂ’s findings on anti-trust issues and value gains in takeovers. He will discuss both economic and legal aspects of these and other issues.

EDITORS: Rosse will speak to business leaders at a seminar from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Denver Marriott City Center, 1701 California St. The seminar is co-sponsored by Holland & Hart and the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry. Management Professor Joe Rosse hopes his new book, “High Impact Hiring: A Comprehensive Guide to Performance-Based Hiring,” will help the average manager make better personnel-related decisions.

News Tip Sheet The University of Colorado menÂ’s Basketball Team has been invited to participate in “Domingo en Casa,” a program started by a CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ professor and his wife to make minority students feel welcome in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The student players will share Sunday dinner with Professor Al Ramirez and his wife, Vera, at their ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ home. Other faculty and community members will join them, along with Coach Ricardo Patton and his wife, Jennifer. The media also are invited to attend the gathering, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5, at 4065 Apache Road.

Fans will have a chance to tackle the classroom before watching the Buffs tackle their football foes at three University of Colorado home games in October and November. “CU Before the Game” seminars, showcasing acclaimed campus performing artists and top-ranked faculty, will give area residents and visitors an opportunity to sample some of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s cultural and academic offerings on game day mornings. Three separate events are scheduled concurrently and participants will be able to attend only one prior to each game. No reservations are necessary.

The Student Conflict Resolution Service, or SCORES, is being launched this fall in an effort to help students resolve conflicts with other students. SCORES will use peer mediation to help students work toward resolving disputes and misunderstandings. The free service will be staffed by trained student mediators working impartially and confidentially to mediate disagreements.

* The Cassini spacecraft is taking a roundabout route to Saturn. It will make two “slingshot” swings past Venus and one each past Earth and Jupiter to achieve the additional speed necessary to reach the Saturn system. When the Voyager spacecraft used a “gravity assist” from Jupiter in 1980, for example, it gained 16 miles per second of speed.
