The Archives of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and Human Rights Week are sponsoring a reception in honor of “Cambodia Witness,” a photographic exhibit exploring the Cambodian holocaust of 1975 to 1979. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in the British Studies Room, on the fifth floor of Norlin Library on the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus.

Ten employees at the University of Colorado have been selected for the 1997-98 Fellows Program as the program celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The Fellows Program is a professional development program for CU employees from all levels of the organization who have exhibited a potential for excellence in their work at CU. Through the program, employees learn about the inner workings of the university, preparing them for possible long-term careers in the organization. The Fellows Program is sponsored by the three ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Campus vice chancellors.

CU-BOULDER NAMES DiSTEFANO Philip DiStefano, associate vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs and former dean of education at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been named interim vice chancellor for academic affairs, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents, according to Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. DiStefano will serve in the interim appointment, effective Oct. 1, until a permanent vice chancellor is selected through a national search. The national search will begin immediately with the goal of placing a permanent vice chancellor by next fall.

Holiday food baskets, toys and clothing will be distributed to about 600 needy families in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County this year from a site at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. CU has donated about 8,000 square feet in Balch Fieldhouse and Carlson Gym to be used as a distribution center between Dec. 17 and Dec. 24.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will host the 9th Annual MacBride Roundtable on Communication Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 1-2. The conference will bring media scholars from around the world to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ to discuss mass communication trends. ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ is the first North American site for the prestigious Roundtable. The theme of the conference, Global Media and Global Responsibility: A Time to Choose, will examine rights and responsibilities of the press in a period of expanding technology.

Sometimes called an “invisible” minority, some 17 deaf and hard of hearing students are quietly reaching their educational goals at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Though the deaf and hard of hearing population at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ is small, students say the services provided are first-rate.

Reynolds Cos. in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, will be named the University of Colorado Real Estate Council's Person of the Year Thursday night, Sept. 25, at an awards banquet at the Hyatt Regency-Downtown Denver. Reynolds, a longtime ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County real estate developer, is responsible for projects including the Pearl East Business Park, Westwood Condominiums, and the Table Mesa and Sunrise shopping centers.

University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Chancellor Richard Byyny has announced a pilot Faculty Ombuds program for the 1997-98 academic year, following a recommendation by the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Faculty Assembly to create a program. Two recently retired faculty members will each serve as part-time Faculty Ombudspersons. Robert Fink, former dean of the College of Music, and Jack Kelso, professor emeritus of anthropology and former director of the Farrand Hall Residential Academic Program, will share the post.

The 1997-98 Sewall Symposium Series at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will open Sept. 29 with a talk on affirmative action by Georgetown University law Professor Mari Matsuda. MatsudaÂ’s address, “We WonÂ’t Go Back: Making the Case for Affirmative Action,” is free and open to the public. The talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Old Main Chapel and will be followed by a reception in the CU Heritage Center.

A stampede of Ralphie-impersonating canines is headed for the University of ColoradoÂ’s Homecoming Parade on Friday, Sept. 26, on University Hill in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The Buffs plays Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. “As part of the parade, we're inviting contestants to dress their dogs like Ralphie and compete for big prizes," said Jen McLaughlin, Homecoming parade coordinator.
