Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam

All AREN and CVEN seniors are required to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam as a graduation requirement.  See below for information about the registration process for the exam, and how to complete the graduation requirement.

The FE Exam is the first step to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer.  It is a nationwide, standardized exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

You can learn about the FE Exam .

NCEES administers the FE Exam at several approved .

You must be in the last two semesters of your BS program to take the FE Exam as a student.

  • CVEN majors often take the FE Exam in the fall of their senior year, to take advantage of the FE prep in CVEN 4897 Professional Issues in CVEN.
  • AREN majors often take the FE Exam in the spring of their senior year, to take advantage of the FE prep in AREN 4819 Architectural Engineering Design 2.

You may also want to consider what classes you'll be taking in your final semester(s) and if any of those subjects will be tested on the exam.  Learn more by reading the .

Regardless of when you plan to take the FE, register early!  Testing center spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and spots are limited.  Registering early will give you the best choice of exam dates and ensure that you can get this requirement completed before graduation.

CVEN majors take the FE Civil exam.

AREN majors usually register for the FE Other Disciplines exam, and past results indicate that AREN students usually do better on this exam.  However, some students choose to take the FE Civil exam.  If you're not sure which to register for, you can view the to see which subjects are covered on each exam, and determine which ones you're most familiar with.

  1. Create an account on the and pay the $225 registration fee for the FE Exam.  Choose your exam date and location.
***If you are unable to register for the FE Exam due to financial hardship, please contact your advisor.

  2. Email your advisor with your exam date so we know you're on track to complete this requirement before graduation.

  3. Forward your advisor the "verifiable link" to your exam results that you receive from NCEES.  You should receive your results approximately 7-10 days after taking the exam.

  4. Your degree audit will be updated to show completion of the FE Exam requirement.

Please take the FE Exam seriously, even if you don't plan to pursue professional licensure.  Employers may ask if you've passed the FE, and may even require it as a job qualification.  FE pass rates also impact your major's accreditation.

As an additional incentive, the CEAE Department will reimburse 50% of the registration fee to students who pass the exam for the 2024-25 academic year.  This happens automatically at the end of each semester via your Bursar's account.  You do not need to do anything (other than provide your exam results) to receive reimbursement.

FE Exam reimbursement is at the discretion of the CEAE Department, and is not guaranteed for future academic years.

If you passed the FE Exam and want to obtain your Engineer Intern (EI) certification in the state of Colorado, you need to submit an application to the State of Colorado Division of Regulatory Agencies (Colorado DORA) to become an Engineer Intern (EI).  Information is on the .

  • then “Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer Intern (EI) – Original License by Application or Endorsement (Apply Online).”

You must provide proof of your ABET-accredited engineering degree as part of the application process.  Information on ordering transcripts is on the Registrar's Office website.  Make sure to wait until after degrees are posted to transcripts - you can find this date on the graduation calendar.

To get your EI certification, you need to take and pass the FE Exam first, then submit the State of Colorado application as described above.

Information on taking the FE exam is at .

We sometimes get questions about engineer licensure in other states.  Please note that all states have their own licensing rules and requirements, which are often different.  Also, terminology can be different (Engineer Intern and Engineer-In-Training are the same thing).  However, the FE is a national exam, so your results may be transferrable.  If you’re interested in getting your certification in another state, you should contact that state’s licensing authority directly to explain your situation, and ask them for advice.  Some states may require you to go through their licensing process.  Other states may allow you to complete your EI in Colorado, and count it toward getting your Professional Engineer (PE) license in the other state.
