Campus severe weather policy
The campus standard for severe weather vicinity is eight miles for storms that include lightning. If a lightning strike occurs within an eight-mile radius of an outdoor event on campus, the event will need to be paused and all staff and attendees will need to evacuate to an indoor location. After the initial lightning strike within the eight-mile radius, 30 minutes must elapse without a subsequent strike in order to resume the event in the original location. Each additional lightning strike will start a new 30-minute window to resume the event. All outdoor spaces will need to evacuate in the event of a lightning strike, including lawn spaces, outdoor patios, outdoor spaces associated with the UMC, including the south terrace tent and Dalton Trumbo Fountain. As a best practice, it is strongly recommended that a severe weather backup space be reserved as part of the space reservation process for events occurring in outdoor spaces.
