Foreign Language and Area Studies
(FLAS) FellowshipsÌý
Program Description:
FLAS fellowships administered by the Center for Asian Studies (CAS) are awarded competitively to students studying modern Asian languages. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) funds and oversees these awards, under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act. Funding is contingent upon annual ED program approval, Federal regulations, and continued Congressional funding, all of which may change from year to year. FLAS awards cannot be deferred.
CAS will be offering academic year fellowships to CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ graduate and professional school students beginning in the 2022-23 year. CAS will also be offering summer fellowships to graduate and professional students as well as undergraduates who can demonstrate financial need beginning in summer 2023.
Please note that the fall 2022 competition is only for academic year awards for graduate and professional students. The competition for summer awards will be held in early spring 2023.
Program Eligibility:
A student is eligible to receive a fellowship or scholarship if he or she:
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Is a graduate student
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Is a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Will be enrolled in a formal Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, or Urdu modern language course during the period of the fellowship (native speakers of the language to be studied are not eligible;Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìýfor summer scholarships, study of Asian languages other than those listed above may be possible pending approval)
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Will pursue full-time study in accordance with CU requirements
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Does not have a 45% or 50% appointment (TA/GRA/GPTI, etc.) for Fall 2022.
Selection Priorities and Criteria:
In reviewing applications,Ìýprimary priority will be given to graduate students demonstrating financial need.ÌýThe following additional criteria will be given secondary consideration (not inclusive and not necessarily in this order):
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Fellows will be selected on the basis of previous academic achievement, language ability, strength of recommendations, commitment to apply language and area studies in future career, promise of highÌý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý academic or professional achievement, and the significance of the proposed course of study to the academic or professional world.Ìý
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Candidates with at least intermediate competence in the Asian language will be given priority; native speakers of the target language will be excluded.Ìý
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Preference will be granted for one award to a student from CU’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.Ìý
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý FLAS fellows must complete a Student Performance Report at the end of the fellowship. Failure to submit this report precludes future participation in the program.
Award Benefits:
2022-23 Academic Year FLAS Fellowship
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Tuition: FLAS will cover up to $18,000 of tuition and fees ($9,000/semester).Ìý
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Stipend: FLAS will provide a stipend of $20,000 ($10,000/semester).Ìý
2023 Summer FLAS Scholarship
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Tuition: FLAS will cover up to $5,000 of tuition and fees.Ìý
·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Stipend: FLAS will provide a stipend of $2,500.Ìý
Please note, combined funding from FLAS awards and other CU appointments cannot exceed the maximum FLAS AY tuition and stipend amounts. FLAS fellows with a Fall 2022 appointment can receive the difference between their current stipend and the FLAS maximum, and up to the lesser of $18,000 or their total tuition and fees bill for Fall. Fellows can receive full Spring 2023 awards if they turn down other appointments. Please contact CAS with questions (see below).
