James F. Williams II, dean and director of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Libraries, is the 2002 recipient of the American Library Association's Melvil Dewey Medal, which recognizes distinguished service to the profession of librarianship. The award is given to an individual or group for recent creative professional achievement in library management, training, cataloging and classification, and the tools and techniques of librarianship. The medal was presented June 18 during the ALA's annual conference in Atlanta.

Shakespeare's "Macbeth" will take on an African flavor at this year's Colorado Shakespeare Festival with the creation of a tribal setting for the production by Director Sean Kelley and Choreographer Onye Ozuzu, based on West African and ancient Mayan cultures. Two Ghanian drummers will perform in the show to help convey the classic tragedy as a folk tale. "Macbeth" opens with a preview performance Wednesday and runs through Aug. 17 at the Mary Rippon outdoor theater on the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus.

University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's School of Education and CU women's basketball coach Ceal Barry are collaborating on a computer camp for 25 female African American and Latina students grades six to eight June 24 to June 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Barry and assistant coach La Tonya Watson will conduct a basketball mini-clinic on June 25 at the CU Recreation Center. Watson, an African American, also will speak to the students during lunch about her life experiences and becoming assistant coach.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Office of Community Affairs will host a public meeting on the "Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day" walk on Wednesday, July 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Darley Commons, room 103, in the Williams Village complex at 30th Street and Baseline Road. The "Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day" is a national fundraiser taking place in 13 cities during summer 2002.

Chancellor Richard Byyny and the Boettcher Foundation have announced that 15 Boettcher Scholars have chosen to attend the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ for their undergraduate studies, the highest number of any Colorado institution. The Boettcher Scholarship is considered to be the most prestigious merit-based scholarship available to graduating high school seniors in the state of Colorado. Forty Boettcher Scholars are selected annually to attend any of the 16 four-year accredited colleges and universities in Colorado.

Several CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty members participated in a weeklong summer institute on teaching American history for approximately 120 Jefferson County teachers. At the final event on June 7, the teachers expressed their appreciation of the institute with a standing ovation.

The Office of Judicial Affairs at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has charged nine CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students who were involved in a party attended by football recruits and players last Dec. 7 with violations of the Student Code of Conduct. The nine students include both women and men and athletes and non-athletes, according to Matthew Lopez Philips, acting director of the Office of Judicial Affairs. The nine cases are being processed.

Deborah Coffin has been named director of the Department of Housing at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, according to Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs. The appointment has been approved by Chancellor Richard Byyny and is effective July 1. Coffin has held the position on an interim basis since December. "During the past six months Deb has proven her ability to serve in the position and has earned my confidence, as well as others, that she is the right person to be the director," Stump said.

What would happen to someone who fell into a black hole? Audience members will have a chance to find out at the CU Wizards show "Black Holes" on Saturday, June 15. Professor Andrew Hamilton of the astrophysical and planetary sciences department will demonstrate the concepts of black holes in CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Fiske Planetarium at 9:30 a.m.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has added 11 new Study Abroad programs, increasing the total number to 150 in 68 countries. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty members will accompany students in two of the new programs, the East Asian Studies summer program and the West African Music and Cultures summer program in Ghana. In the latter program, Professor Kwasi Ampene of the College of Music will instruct students in his native country.
