Largest Class Of High School Students In Pre-Collegiate Summer Programs Starts At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ June 15

More than 180 students from 15 Denver-area high schools will participate in the Pre-Collegiate Development Summer Residential Program at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, the largest class in the program's history. According to Director Johanna Maes, 85 juniors and 101 sophomores are enrolled in programs that include a variety of academic courses, study skills instruction, and workshops on preparing for college entrance exams and the application process.

Orientation Program Prepares New Students For Life At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ

Students preparing to begin study at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ can get helpful advising and a sneak preview of life on campus starting June 13. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's College of Arts and Sciences orientation program will offer nine two-day sessions during the summer for freshmen and two for transfer students. Business students also are invited to some of the sessions. Engineering, music, and architecture and planning students must attend orientation programs at their colleges during the week before fall classes begin.

Robert H. Davis Named Dean Of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ College Of Engineering And Applied Science

Robert H. Davis, chair of chemical engineering and Patten Professor at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been named dean of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ College of Engineering and Applied Science. The appointment, effective July 1, was announced today by Provost Phil DiStefano pending final approval by the CU Board of Regents.

The surface of the sun is covered with transient storms, high and low pressure zones and swirling wind flows that vary from day to day like weather patterns on Earth's surface, according to new results by University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ researchers using the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO. The results are being presented at the spring American Astronomical Society meeting held in Albuquerque, N.M., June 2 to June 6. SOHO is a joint satellite mission between NASA and the European Space Agency.

Colorado Japanese Language School Graduates Recount War Experiences At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ June 8

A roundtable discussion on the experiences of graduates and teachers of the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Japanese Language School during World War II and afterward will be held at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ on June 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Old Main Chapel. According to Lynn Kalinauskas, associate director of the Center for Asian Studies, graduates of the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Navy Language School played a key role in establishing the field of Japanese Studies in the post-war period, as well as contributing to U.S.-Japanese relations in various other fields.

Rare Partial Solar Eclipse To Be Visible Over Colorado June 10

Barring the common late afternoon thunderstorms of June, Coloradans will get a rare chance to see the moon slide across the face of the sun during a partial solar eclipse on June 10. Solar eclipses usually occur twice a year, but are not always visible from the United States, according to experts at Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. In fact, the next chance to see a solar eclipse in Colorado won't be until May 20, 2012, according to Robert Stoller, operations manager at Fiske Planetarium.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Hosts 60th Reunion Of U.S. Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School June 7

Alumni of the U.S. Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School will reunite at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ 60 years to the month after the Japanese Language School was moved to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ in 1942. Attendees will be welcomed at a luncheon on Friday, June 7, where a color guard will present the flag. The flag will be retired at the conclusion of the reunion Sunday, June 9. A plaque honoring the instructors and graduates of the school will be dedicated in the University Memorial Center at 4:30 p.m. on June 7. The dedication is free and open to the public.

The University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has announced the addition of Peggy L. Tucker to its business division as a senior accountant. Tucker will oversee purchasing and accounts payable and receivable and will supervise three staff members. She will report to Business Manager Mary E. Covell. Tucker has worked in accounting positions at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ since 1986 and is an expert in purchasing. She graduated from CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ with a degree in psychology in 1985.
