About the program
The MEd in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership for School Employees is designed for teachers who have completed the Alternative Routes to Certification program (ARCSE). The program aims to strengthen instructional skills while developing leadership abilities for such roles as peer coach, mentor, department chairs, staff development leaders, or curriculum coordinators.
The Teaching, Learning, and Leadership master’s program is designed to be completed online. Some courses are also offered on campus, or in partnership with local districts and schools.
Portfolio and comprehensive exam
In addition to course requirements, you are required to create a portfolio over the course of the program. These requirements will be integrated into coursework as much as possible.
You are also required to complete a take-home comprehensive exam at the end of the program as part of your capstone course.
Admission requirements
To apply for admission, submit the following items to the Graduate Admissions:
- and $50 application processing fee.
- Copy of current Washington state teaching certificate, front and back.
- Official transcript(s) from each college and/or university attended.
- If your degree is not from a U.S. college or university, please arrange for your transcript to be evaluated by a -recognized credential service. Acceptable credential services include, but are not limited to, (WES) and (FIS).

- Personal statement (1–2 pages).
- Present a GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 = A) in the last 45 quarter credits of coursework completed.*
- Two letters of recommendation - supervisor, professional, or academic. At least one of these recommendations must address your leadership abilities and potential.
*The or will be required if GPA is less than 3.0. On the GRE, preferred minimum scores of Verbal: 148 and Quantitative: 147. On the MAT, preferred minimum scaled score of 400.
