It is spoken in Russia, other countries in the former Soviet Union, and in many communities in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and North America. It is one of the five official languages of the United Nations. The U.S. government has classified Russian as a critical needs language vital to its national security interests.

- A minimum of 56 credits is required for this major, including 25 upper-division credits.

- Plan carefully with your faculty advisor, because beginning and intermediate Russian courses are offered alternate years.
- A course in modern Russian literature and culture as well as independent-study options are also available.
- You are required to complete a Senior Paper and present it in conjunction with the Capstone seminar, and are encouraged to participate in a significant study abroad.
- For the minor, you must complete two courses from the required History/Global courses and at least 25 credits from the Russian course offerings.
